The Teacher Spotlight
| Effective 10/07/08: Every Tuesday of the week a teacher will be spotlighted on this page. Rules: that teacher and the student that nominates this person must both be subscribers to the Shimmy Chronicles. The teacher must be nominated by a current or past student. The spotlight may include: picture; physical/website/email address; contact phone number and a brief bio - 200 words or less. Concentrate this bio on the unique abilities of this teacher. Post your name, contact info and nomination to the blog. I will contact you a week prior to the spotlight for the spotlight info - send it by separate cover to the email address: khughes@qwestoffice.net. There are only 52 weeks of the year and more than a few teachers out there, so please be patient. It will be first come, first serve. And we will start with my teacher, of course. |

Whenever Phoenix appears on stage, you know it will be something different; it will be mesmerizing; and she will use some type of prop. She's well-known for her Wings dancing in which she uses irridescent, pleated wings which swirl and float, making beautiful shapes as they move through the air. As her students, she's taught us to use fans, lighted candles, zills, veils and Thai Fingers. Even if you don't do all the moves perfectly, she's willing to give you a chance to perform on stage and is right there to cheer you on. She is one of the most supportive, encouraging teachers I've danced with. She's done a lot for the belly dance community, sponsoring several events a year, and giving many teachers and students a chance to perform. It's also brought this type of dance into the mainstream here in Denver.

Hi, Mercedes here. My teacher Joynan has been inspirational for me since I met her way too long ago to count(24 yrs ago!). She has definite specialties - being world renowned for her double veil and double sword. |  |
What you may not know about her is that she is an excellent choreographer. Her extensive knowledge of the dance, the techniques and the music enable her to picture the most amazing compositions.She is a very patient teacher and does not force a movement onto you. She recognizes when something doesn't fit you and quickly adapts to and for you. On the other hand, she recognizes your style and helps you develop it. I like this, because so many of us tend to look like a carbon copy of our teachers, not so with Joynan. She really concentrates on helping you find your own style and look. Thank you Joynan for being in my life.
